Policy Changes
Prevention science shows policy change to be one of the most effective strategies to reduce substance misuse and its related consequences. To make long-term changes at the community level, Levittown Community Action Coalition works with the Town of Hempstead to introduce, change, and support policies related to underage access to substances. One such substance abuse policy supported by LCAC is the Social Host Law, which serves to deter the consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors by holding those over the age of eighteen accountable when underage drinking occurs at their residence, resulting in potential fines and even jail time. In 2021, Nassau County legislators, including representatives that work closely with LCAC, voted to expand the Social Host Law to include marijuana and opioids in addition to alcohol.1
